Zeolite

CAS#  : 1318-02-1

Zeolites are multifunctional builders that are an alternative to phosphate type builders.  Their main task is to soften the water and to boost the effect of the surfactants. They are microporous minerals that can accommodate a wide variety of cations such as Na, K, Ca and Mg. They act as ion exchanger builders that replace the water hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) with sodium ions. They also prevent redeposition on the fabrics being washed by providing a surface for oils, colors and solubility salts to deposit.

Zeolites used in the detergent industry are produced synthetically. The normal production routes involve heating aqueous solutions of alumina and silica with sodium hydroxide. The synthetic zeolites hold some important advantages over their natural equivalents, since it is possible to produce Zeolite structures that do not appear in nature.

It can be used in powder laundry detergents and automatic dishwashing tablets. The preferred builder in compact powder detergents.
